Most rely on self-reporting, do not analyze binge drinking, do not assess alcohol consumption over a lifetime, or do not account for the fact that some study subjects may reduce their alcohol consumption due to alcohol-related health problems. Still, this new research is among the best we have linking what is commonly considered moderate drinking to negative health consequences. Earlier studies have shown how long do alcoholics live an increased mortality risk in people who abstain from alcohol, compared with individuals who consume low to moderate alcohol amounts. However, the authors of the recent study chalk this up to risky behaviors that people abstaining from alcohol engaged in earlier in their lives. Some recent studies have linked moderate alcohol consumption to health benefits, such as lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

Prevalence of Past-Month Binge Drinking

Studies With Weak or No Links Between Alcohol Intake and Longevity

Older adults with mental health conditions such as depression, dementia, cognitive impairments, or anxiety are at a greater risk for developing problems with alcohol.
